A rotable is an aircraft part that is expected to be removed, repaired or overhauled, and returned to service repeatedly over a long life — rather than being consumed or discarded at first removal.
Rotables are tracked individually by serial number, accumulate a documented maintenance history, and are normally the highest-value material a parts business or operator holds.
What makes something a rotable
The defining characteristic is the cycle. A rotable comes off an aircraft, goes to a shop, comes back serviceable and goes onto another aircraft — potentially dozens of times across a service life measured in decades. Typical examples include hydraulic actuators, avionics units, pumps, valves, generators, landing gear components and engine accessories.
Because the same physical unit returns again and again, two things follow that do not apply to other material:
- Individual identity is essential. The unit's serial number is what its history is attached to. Track it by part number alone and the history has nowhere to live.
- The history is part of the asset. Cumulative time, shop visits, modification standard and documented origin all affect what the unit is worth and who will buy it.
The economics
Rotables are best understood as capital assets that earn repeatedly rather than as stock that is sold once.
- A pool serves many customers. One serviceable unit can support many transactions over its life, because each exchange returns a unit that becomes the next serviceable one. This is why rotable inventory underpins exchange programs.
- Repair cost is compared to asset value. Every shop visit is a decision: does the repair estimate justify the value of the restored unit? When it does not, the unit is declared beyond economic repair.
- Condition sets the price. The same rotable can trade across a very wide range depending on whether it is overhauled, serviceable or as-removed — see condition codes.
- Documentation gaps destroy value disproportionately. On a high-value rotable, a missing link in the history can cost more than a physical defect would.
How remaining usefulness is governed
Not all rotables are managed the same way, and the distinction matters when you are buying one:
- On-condition — the unit stays in service while it continues to pass the required inspections and tests. There is no fixed retirement point.
- Hard time — the unit must be overhauled or restored at a defined interval, regardless of how it appears.
- Life-limited — the unit or a component within it must be permanently retired at a hard limit expressed in hours, cycles or calendar time. For these, back-to-birth records are normally required, because remaining life cannot be established any other way.
Buying a life-limited rotable without the records to establish accumulated life is buying an asset whose remaining value you cannot determine.
Where rotables create operational work
- Serialized stock control. Each unit has its own location, condition, ownership and document file.
- Repair coordination. Units spend meaningful periods outside the building, at shops the holder does not control.
- Exchange obligations. When a rotable ships on exchange, an obligation to receive a core back opens and stays open.
- Valuation. Because condition and history vary per unit, rotable inventory cannot be valued on a simple average-cost basis in the way consumables can.
Common misunderstandings
Rotable is not simply "expensive"
The classification is about the repair cycle, not the price tag. Some expensive items are not rotables, and some modestly priced items are.
Rotable and repairable are not universally distinguished
Many organizations use the two interchangeably, and others draw the line differently. Where a distinction is made, it is usually about expected cycles and value rather than about anything technical. See repairable.
A rotable does not carry its history automatically
The unit does not know where it has been. Its history exists only because somebody recorded it and kept the record attached to that serial number. History is maintained, not inherent — which is why it is so often lost.
