Repairable aircraft part

A repairable can be economically restored rather than discarded — but sits below a rotable in value and expected cycles. The boundary between the two is a commercial convention, not a technical rule, and plenty of organizations do not draw it at all.

A repairable is an aircraft part that can be economically restored to a serviceable condition rather than discarded when it fails — but which is generally of lower value, and expected to go through fewer repair cycles, than a rotable.

Repairable versus rotable

Both classes can be restored and returned to service. Where organizations do separate them, the distinction usually rests on three things:

  • Value. Rotables are the high-value assemblies; repairables sit below them.
  • Expected cycles. A rotable is planned to come back many times. A repairable may be restored once or twice before being scrapped.
  • Scrap sensitivity. A repairable is far more likely to be discarded when a repair quote comes back high, because the margin between repair cost and replacement cost is narrower.

On terminology

It is entirely normal to encounter organizations that treat "rotable" as the umbrella term for all repairable material, and others that maintain a strict separation for planning and valuation purposes. Neither is incorrect. When the distinction matters commercially — in a contract, a quote or a stock valuation — confirm which convention the other party is using rather than assuming.

The disposition decision

The defining operational moment for a repairable is the point at which somebody decides what happens to it. That decision typically has four possible outcomes:

  • Repair. The estimate is acceptable relative to the restored unit's value and the customer's need.
  • Exchange. A serviceable unit is supplied instead and this one becomes a core. Usually chosen when turn time matters more than cost.
  • Replace. A new or serviceable unit is bought outright and this one is disposed of.
  • Scrap. The unit is declared beyond economic repair and removed from inventory, with the mutilation and disposal controls that responsible practice requires.

Making that decision well requires three numbers that frequently live in three different places: the repair estimate, the current market value of a serviceable unit, and the remaining life of the unit in hand.

Documentation and inspection implications

Repairables carry the same documentary obligations as any other material released after maintenance, which surprises organizations that treat them as semi-consumable:

  • Each shop visit produces a release document — see FAA Form 8130-3 — and that document becomes part of the unit's history.
  • Serial-level tracking is normally still required, because condition and history remain unit-specific.
  • Incoming inspection applies on return from the shop exactly as it does on purchase. See incoming inspection.
  • Repeated repairs accumulate history, and a unit with an unusually long repair record may be worth less than its condition code suggests.

Common misunderstandings

Repairable does not mean "worth repairing"

It means restoration is technically possible. Whether it is worth doing is an economic question answered per event, against a current estimate and a current market value.

Repairable is not a regulatory classification

It is an inventory and planning category used by operators, MROs and distributors. Regulations address maintenance, records and approval for return to service; they do not assign parts to commercial inventory classes.

A cheap repairable is not automatically low-risk

Documentation obligations do not scale with unit price. A modestly valued repairable with missing paperwork can hold up a shipment just as effectively as an expensive one.
